That sounds like you didn't supply the right -p $number to patch.  I
generally apply patches with patch -p0 < file  tweaking the number
until the paths in the path and my sandbox match up.

Well since nothing had changed on those files since I generated the
diff (I'm now watching the changes list), I'd have assumed not.

ListHeaders doesn't take any preferences, so it won't be
user-controllable even if you do set it up as a personal plugin.
